A native of Baltimore, MD- Steven Richardson began this journey in 1995 as a jewelry designer specializing in gold, silver and precious stones. As his knowledge, skill and curiosity progressed, Richardson traveled throughout Thailand and Japan where he studied additional niches of the jewelry industry. Later he continued his gemology education in Brazil. When he returned to the US, he combined his knowledge of gems with his growing fascination with timepieces. This led him to study horology under a master watchmaker in NYC. It is this skill that he is obliged to share with others.

The Nkiru Watch Company was established in 2000. Nkiru is a Nigerian (Ibo) word meaning “looking ahead”. The name is not only relevant and highly appropriate for a timepiece company; it is also a representation of Richardson’s vision for exposing young people to the world of horology. Richardson is not only a talented watchmaker he is also an instructor.

In 2001 Richardson developed his first one-of- a-kind timepiece. Richardson continues to carve out his own niche, designing distinctive, limited-edition timepieces for a one of a kind select clientele.

NKIRU’s client base include watch connoisseurs, collectors and celebrated actors, sports figures and writers. Included are Maya Angelou, Malik Yoba, Ovie Mughelli and Keith Robinson. Nkiru shares not only a passion for imaginative watch design, but also a desire to add quality to life.

In addition to stunning timepieces and teaching the Art of Horology, Mr. Richardson and NKIRU are also very involved in combating the issues of conflict diamonds. An issue that has devastated Africa and continues to contribute to devastating civil wars resulting in the destruction of millions of lives across the continent.  To reinforce his commitment to this important issue, CEO and Designer, Steven Richardson of  NKIRU Company designed a new line of creating timepieces, “The Red Tear Collection”, that incorporates certified non-conflict diamonds. NKIRU is building alliances with Canadian and Indian companies that only sell non-conflict diamonds and semi precious stones.
